Cold Chain & Temperature-Controlled

Reefer containers pull from Seagirt on a genset and go to chilled or frozen partner space in the Jessup corridor or near the port. Temperature logged, lots traced, one accountable desk.

A reefer container that loses power on a chassis for four hours is a claim, not a shipment. Cold chain is a chain because every link has a thermometer, and the weak link is usually a hand-off: the gate, the genset, the dock door that stayed open. Cold chain logistics from Baltimore 3PL plans each link before the box discharges. The drayage partner arrives with a genset. The cold dock is booked. The room is at set point. The lot is traced from the terminal to the pick.

Seagirt, the container terminal at the Port of Baltimore, has 350 reefer plugs and moved a record 1,113,309 TEU in 2025. The port is the No. 2 US gateway for imported sugar, with the Domino Sugar refinery beside Locust Point. The Jessup and Elkridge corridor south of the city is the densest food distribution cluster in Maryland. Between the terminal and that corridor sit the partner cold rooms we use.

How it runs at the Port of Baltimore

The container discharges and plugs in at Seagirt. Customs clearance is coordinated through our licensed customs broker partners, and food holds are cleared before the box pulls. A drayage partner arrives with a genset chassis and moves the box to the cold dock. The dock receives against your lot list, checks pulp temperatures and moves product into the room at the set point you specified.

From the room, three paths:

  • Storage. Pallets wait in chilled or frozen space until you call them. See warehousing for the storage model.
  • Cross-dock. Product sorts by customer and leaves the same day on reefer trailers. See cross-docking.
  • Transload. Product reloads from the ocean reefer into a domestic reefer trailer for the inland leg, and the ocean box returns inside free time.

Daily status by email lists receipts, inventory by lot and date, shipments and the temperature log.

Temperature bands

Chilled rooms at 2 to 8 C hold produce, dairy and pharmaceuticals. Frozen rooms at minus 20 C hold seafood, meat and prepared foods. Life-science partners hold minus 80 C and liquid nitrogen for biologics. Tell us the band and the tolerance. We match the room and the partner.

What the partner network brings

Baltimore 3PL is a service-area logistics company. We do not run a cold room in Baltimore. Cold chain runs through a partner network we have curated for 50 years: cold storage operators, reefer drayage carriers, reefer truckload partners and licensed customs broker partners. Our partners hold the registrations a food or pharmaceutical program needs. We place freight only with partners whose registrations and rooms fit the product.

That matters because cold space is specific. Frozen seafood and chilled produce do not share a room. A pharmaceutical lot needs a partner with a validated room and a chain-of-custody record. A pallet of frozen bakery for a grocery distribution center needs a partner on I-95 with a dock near the retailer. One desk picks the right room for each. Reach it at (419) 745-9492 or operations@sams3pl.com, Monday to Friday, 07:00 to 18:00 Eastern, after hours by arrangement.

What it costs and what moves the price

Cold chain is quoted as storage per pallet per month by temperature band, handling per pallet, reefer drayage per container and reefer truckload per lane. The price moves with:

  • Temperature band. Frozen costs more than chilled. Minus 80 C costs more than both.
  • Dwell. Fast-turning product pays handling. Slow product pays storage.
  • Genset and plug time. Reefer drayage bills the genset, and days on a terminal plug bill per day.
  • Lot tracking. Lot and date tracking, pulp checks and temperature records add per-pallet labor.
  • Pallet build. Mixed-SKU pallets and case picks cost more than full pallets in and out.
  • Lane. Reefer truckload to Washington DC at 40 miles prices differently from New York at 195 or Chicago at 700.

The drayage guide explains terminal free time and plug charges.

Who ships cold through Baltimore

Food and life-science demand in the region is growing on both sides of the harbor. The Domino Sugar refinery at Locust Point moved to continuous operations in 2025. Home Chef runs a manufacturing and distribution center in Baltimore City. Feast & Fettle opened production in Elkridge and Saval Foods is consolidating into Columbia. The State of Maryland opened a grain transload at Seagirt in 2026 for containerized exports. On the life-science side, the University of Maryland BioPark and Johns Hopkins anchor a cluster that ships biologics, reagents and clinical kits at tight temperature ranges.

Those shippers need cold rooms within a short drive of the terminal and a shorter drive of the customer. The Jessup corridor delivers to Washington DC in about an hour and Philadelphia in about two. Dundalk and Sparrows Point partners serve port-side programs that reload and leave. We quote both and show you the landed cost per pallet.

  • Lot, date and traceability requirements
  • Outbound customers, lanes and delivery windows
  • Registrations or audits your program requires from the warehouse

Questions shippers ask

01What temperature ranges can you place?

Chilled at 2 to 8 C, frozen at minus 20 C, and deep-frozen at minus 80 C through life-science partners. Tell us the range and the tolerance and we match the room.

02Are the warehouses food registered?

Our partners hold the registrations a food program needs. We place food only with partners whose registrations fit the product.

03How do reefer containers move from Seagirt?

A drayage partner pulls the box on a chassis with a genset and delivers it live to the cold dock. The box plugs in or unloads on arrival.

04Where is the cold space?

The Jessup and Elkridge corridor is the state’s food distribution cluster and sits on I-95 toward Washington DC. Partners near Dundalk and Sparrows Point serve port-side programs.

05Do you provide temperature records?

Yes. Partners log room and trailer temperatures and we send them with the daily status by email, or on demand for a lot.
