Primary route from the port

Northern Virginia takes more freight from the Port of Baltimore than most people expect, because the port is 45 to 70 road miles away by I-95 and I-495 and the region builds data centers, houses defense contractors and runs the air cargo gateway at Dulles. Baltimore 3PL coordinates partner warehouses in Maryland, inside Foreign Trade Zone 74, and carrier partners who deliver into Alexandria, Arlington, the Dulles corridor and Prince William County on a timed schedule. We do not own a building in Virginia or anywhere else. You get one accountable desk, and the desk gets the right partner for the lane.

Getting there from the pier

Seagirt Marine Terminal is the Port of Baltimore’s container terminal. Dundalk Marine Terminal, beside it, handles ro-ro, breakbulk and project cargo. A standard load leaves either gate on I-95 south, passes under the harbor in the Fort McHenry Tunnel or the I-895 Baltimore Harbor Tunnel, and continues on I-95 to the Capital Beltway. From there, I-495 west reaches Arlington and the Dulles side, and I-95 south past Springfield reaches Prince William. Arlington is about 45 road miles, Alexandria about 50, Dulles and Manassas about 60 to 65. Plan on 75 minutes to two hours, and book delivery windows around the Beltway, not around the pier.

The Key Bridge collapse in March 2024 did not change the standard Virginia lane, which always used the tunnels. Restricted loads are different. Hazmat, loads over 14 feet 6 inches high and loads over 11 feet wide may not use either tunnel. They loop the west side of I-695 and rejoin I-95 south, about 30 to 35 extra miles and 45 to 60 minutes, until the new bridge opens in late 2030. Data center switchgear, transformers and generators often hit the height limit. We plan those on the loop. See Key Bridge truck routing.

Alexandria

Alexandria has little industrial land, so freight for the city stages in Maryland and delivers in. Hospitality, office fit-out and federal contractor inbound are the common loads. Our final-mile partners deliver timed and inside.

Arlington

Arlington is the defense headquarters market, home to the Pentagon and Amazon HQ2. Freight here is high value and low cube: equipment for integrators, office and lab fit-out, and demonstration gear that must arrive on an appointment with a chain of custody. See the defense, aerospace and government page.

Dulles air cargo

Dulles is the region’s air freight gateway, and it pairs with Seagirt. Urgent parts fly in through Dulles while the bulk of the order comes by sea to Baltimore, and both meet in a Maryland partner warehouse. Our freight forwarding partners book the air legs and we coordinate the handoffs. Loudoun County, next to the airport, is the largest data center market in the world and has its own page at Loudoun County and Ashburn.

Manassas and Prince William

Prince William County holds the region’s second data center cluster, around Manassas. Construction inbound is racks, generators, chillers and switchgear, oversize and high value. We stage it from the port or from Maryland partner warehouses and deliver it to the site on the day the contractor can receive it. Read more on the data center logistics page.

What we run in Northern Virginia

Warehousing in Maryland partner buildings between the port and the Beltway. Prologis Corridor Industrial Park at MD-32 and I-95 is the kind of park where Virginia-bound freight waits, about 20 minutes from the pier and under an hour from the Beltway. Daily status by email and one invoice.

White glove and final mile delivery for timed, inside and installed deliveries to offices, contractors and data halls across the region.

Freight forwarding through partner forwarders for the air legs at Dulles and the ocean legs at Seagirt, with customs clearance coordinated through our licensed customs broker partners.

Duty deferral before the state line

Virginia is not inside FTZ 74. Maryland is, and the zone covers Baltimore City plus Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Cecil, Harford, Howard and Queen Anne’s counties. Goods can wait in an FTZ-approved partner warehouse in that area with no duty paid, and the duty is paid only when an order ships to the Virginia buyer. Goods re-exported never pay. For a data center contractor holding imported racks for a site that is six months from ready, that is a large duty bill pushed to the day it matters. The FTZ 74 guide explains the mechanics.

Questions shippers ask

01How far is Northern Virginia from the Port of Baltimore?

Arlington is about 45 road miles from the Seagirt gate, Alexandria about 50, Dulles and Manassas about 60 to 65. Count on 75 minutes to two hours depending on the Beltway.

02Do you have a warehouse in Northern Virginia?

No. We coordinate partner warehouses in Maryland between the port and the Beltway, inside FTZ 74, and deliver into Virginia on a schedule.

03Can duty be deferred on goods going to Virginia?

Yes, while they wait in Maryland. Virginia is outside FTZ 74, but goods can sit in an approved partner building in the zone and pay duty only when they ship to the Virginia buyer.

04Can you move air freight through Dulles?

Yes. Our forwarding partners book air cargo through Dulles, and we connect it with ocean freight at Seagirt and partner warehousing in between.

05Which route does a truck take from the port to Northern Virginia?

I-95 south through the Fort McHenry Tunnel, then I-495 west or I-95 south past Springfield. Hazmat and oversize loads loop the west side of I-695 first.
