Ledger 06 · Why Baltimore
The closest Atlantic port to the Midwest, now with double-stack rail.
One third of US households sit within a day’s drive of the Seagirt gate. Fifty-foot berths and twelve cranes handle the largest ships calling the East Coast. Since June 2026 the rail out of the port runs two containers high.

The geography does the first half of the work
Baltimore sits at the top of the Chesapeake Bay, 150 miles further inland than the Virginia capes and a day closer to Ohio than the ports of New York and New Jersey. The Maryland Port Administration puts it plainly: Baltimore is the closest Atlantic port to major Midwestern population and manufacturing centers, with immediate access to the 6.8 million people of the Washington and Baltimore region and a day’s reach to about one third of US households.
For an importer that sells into Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Illinois, that geography is the rate. The truck leg from the pier is shorter, the driver gets home sooner, and the box turns faster.
The water and the cranes do the second half
Seagirt Marine Terminal has 50-foot berths and twelve ship-to-shore cranes, including Super Neo-Panamax units that can work a vessel 24 containers wide. Ports America Chesapeake runs it under a 50-year agreement. In 2025 the terminal moved 1,113,309 TEU, a record, on 15 weekly container services. A second container terminal at Sparrows Point breaks its first berth in 2028 and adds more than a million containers of capacity.
Dundalk Marine Terminal next door is the ro-ro and breakbulk workhorse: 570 acres, 13 berths, heavy-lift cranes and direct Norfolk Southern rail. It is why Baltimore is the No. 1 US port for farm and construction machinery and forest products, and No. 2 for autos.
The rail finally matches the port
For a century the Howard Street Tunnel under downtown Baltimore was 18 inches too short for double-stack trains. CSX and the state fixed it. The tunnel reopened in September 2025 and double-stack service started in June 2026. The MPA expects about 160,000 more containers a year as a result. A box can now leave Seagirt by rail for Chicago without being lifted at an inland ramp. What that means for your landed cost.
Foreign Trade Zone 74
FTZ 74 covers Baltimore City and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Cecil, Harford, Howard and Queen Anne’s counties. Imported goods can sit in activated partner space with duty deferred until they enter US commerce, and re-exports never pay it. All of Tradepoint Atlantic is inside the zone. When Baltimore is not the answer
We will say so. If your customers are in New England, Boston or New York may win on the final leg. If they are in the Carolinas, Norfolk or Charleston may. If the ocean carrier you are contracted to does not call Baltimore, the string decides. A good 3PL prices the whole lane, not the port it happens to sit in. Baltimore versus Norfolk versus NY/NJ, with the trade-offs.
Questions about routing through Baltimore
01Is Baltimore really closer to the Midwest than other East Coast ports?
Yes. The Maryland Port Administration describes Baltimore as the closest Atlantic port to major Midwestern population and manufacturing centers. From the Seagirt gate it is about 250 road miles to Pittsburgh and about 420 to Columbus.
02Can big ships call Baltimore?
Seagirt has 50-foot berths and twelve ship-to-shore cranes, including Super Neo-Panamax units that work ships up to 24 containers wide. It is one of a handful of East Coast ports with 50-foot depth.
03What changed with rail in 2026?
CSX finished the Howard Street Tunnel clearance project. Double-stack trains have run from the port since June 2026, so a box can go to the Midwest by rail with no inland lift.
04When is Baltimore the wrong port?
If your destination is New England or the Southeast, a closer port may win on drayage. If you need a specific carrier service that does not call Baltimore, the string decides. We will tell you when another gateway is cheaper.
05Does the Key Bridge collapse still affect freight?
The channel reopened in June 2024 and ships are unaffected. Trucks carrying hazmat or over-height loads cannot use the harbor tunnels and loop I-695 west until the bridge reopens in late 2030. We price that detour in.
