Elkridge sits where Route 1, I-95 and I-895 run side by side between the Baltimore harbor and the BWI corridor. The Route 1 belt through Elkridge and Jessup is the densest 3PL cluster in Maryland, and Elkridge is the end of it closest to the port. A container that clears Seagirt, the Port of Baltimore’s container terminal, can be on an Elkridge dock in about 25 minutes. Baltimore 3PL coordinates partner warehouses, drayage carriers and cross-dock crews in Elkridge. We do not own a building here. You get one accountable desk, and the desk picks the right partner for the lane.
Getting there from the pier
Seagirt Marine Terminal handles containers. Dundalk Marine Terminal, next door, handles ro-ro, breakbulk and forest products. Both sit on the east side of the harbor. A standard load for Elkridge leaves either gate, takes I-95 south through the Fort McHenry Tunnel or I-895 through the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel, and exits to Route 1 or stays on I-95 to the Elkridge interchanges. Plan on about 15 road miles and 25 minutes outside rush hour. Having two tunnels to choose from matters on the days one of them is backed up, and a drayage partner can turn two Elkridge containers in a shift.
The Key Bridge collapse in March 2024 did not change this lane for most freight. The bridge carried I-695 across the Patapsco on the outer harbor, and the Elkridge run never used it. The change hits restricted loads. Hazmat, loads over 14 feet 6 inches high and loads over 11 feet wide may not use either tunnel. They loop the west side of I-695, about 30 to 35 extra miles and 45 to 60 minutes. The new bridge opens in late 2030. Until then we price and schedule those moves on the loop and tell you before you book. See Key Bridge truck routing for the limits.
Industrial parks and who is there
Elkridge is the port end of the Jessup, Columbia and Elkridge corridor in Howard County. The anchor park for the belt is Prologis Baltimore Washington Industrial Park, 13 buildings on the Jessup side of the line, a few minutes down Route 1. Food is the story in Elkridge itself. Feast & Fettle, the prepared-meal company, is opening a 25,000 square foot production and distribution site in Elkridge. Saval Foods, the foodservice distributor, is consolidating from Elkridge into a 218,000 square foot lease in Columbia by the end of 2027. Both moves say the same thing. Elkridge is where food and consumer brands put product that has to reach Baltimore and Washington the same day.
What we run in Elkridge
Three services carry most of the freight here.
Warehousing in partner buildings along Route 1 and I-95. Short-term overflow for a peak, or a standing position for a brand that sells into both metros. Daily status by email, one invoice.
Cross-docking for import containers that need to break into store or customer loads without a storage stop. The dray from Seagirt is short enough that a morning pickup can be on outbound trucks the same afternoon.
E-commerce fulfillment for direct-to-consumer brands. About one third of US households sit within a day’s drive of the port, and the parcel carriers run dense routes through the belt.
For food shippers, our partners on the belt include temperature-controlled buildings, and we match the permit to the product. We place freight only with partners whose permits fit the cargo. Read more on the food and beverage page.
FTZ 74 and duty deferral
Elkridge is in Howard County, and Howard County has been inside the FTZ 74 service area since 2019. FTZ 74 is administered by the Baltimore Development Corporation. Goods can enter an FTZ-approved partner warehouse without paying duty, and the duty is paid when the goods leave for the US market. Goods that are re-exported never pay. Importers with high duty rates or slow turns use the deferral to hold cash. Customs clearance is coordinated through our licensed customs broker partners. The FTZ 74 guide explains activation and when a bonded warehouse is the better fit.

Questions shippers ask
01How far is Elkridge from the Port of Baltimore?
About 15 road miles from the Seagirt gate, around 25 minutes outside peak traffic. The route uses I-95 or I-895 through the harbor tunnels.
02Do you own a warehouse in Elkridge?
No. We coordinate partner warehouses and carriers along Route 1 and I-95. You deal with one desk, and the desk picks the building that fits the cargo.
03Is Elkridge inside FTZ 74?
Yes. Elkridge is in Howard County, which joined the FTZ 74 service area in 2019. Duty deferral works in an FTZ-approved partner building.
04Does the Key Bridge collapse affect deliveries to Elkridge?
Not for standard loads, which use the tunnels as they always did. Hazmat and over-height or over-width loads must loop the west side of I-695, about 45 to 60 minutes more.
05Can you handle refrigerated food in Elkridge?
Yes, through temperature-controlled partner buildings on the belt. Tell us the temperature band and the regulatory program when you ask for a quote.
