Ledger 03 · How we work

No warehouse of our own. Every warehouse we need.

A 3PL that owns one building sells you that building. Baltimore 3PL is a desk with a bench: partners chosen over 50 years, matched to your cargo, run under one quote and one accountable person.

Why we built it this way

Freight through the Port of Baltimore is not one kind of freight. A reefer of seafood, a flat rack carrying a transformer, 400 tractors off a ro-ro deck and a container of racks bound for a data center in Loudoun County each need a different floor, a different truck and a different permit. No single building does all of them well. So we never bought one.

Instead we spent 50 years finding the operators around the harbor who do one thing very well, and we kept the ones who kept their word. That bench is the company. When your freight lands, the desk picks the partner that fits and prices the whole move as one number.

What you get

One contract with Baltimore 3PL. One quote with the partner cost inside it. One daily status email. One person who booked the move, watches it, and picks up when the trailer is late. The partner does the lifting. We own the result.

What we do not do

We do not sell you space because we have space to sell. We do not file customs entries ourselves; a licensed customs broker partner does, with our paperwork. We do not claim certifications we do not hold. If a program needs a registration, we place it with a partner who holds it, and we say so in the quote.

How a partner gets on the bench

  • Permits and endorsements that fit the cargo
  • Equipment on the lot, not on a brochure
  • Insurance in force, certificate on file
  • Who answers the phone at 06:30
  • How they handled the last problem, not the last sale

Partners who fail a check come off the bench. That is the whole quality system, and it has worked for 50 years.

Questions about the model

01If you do not own the warehouse, who is responsible when something goes wrong?

We are. Your contract is with Baltimore 3PL. The desk that quoted the move is the desk that fixes it, and the partner answers to us.

02Will I pay a markup on top of the partner’s rate?

You pay one quoted figure. Our margin is inside it. There is no second invoice from the partner and no surprise accessorial we did not quote.

03Can I visit the warehouse where my goods are?

Yes. We arrange it with the partner and we come with you. Nothing about the model is hidden.

04How do you choose a partner for my freight?

By cargo, lane, permit and deadline. A hazmat box, a reefer load and a pallet of consumer goods go to three different partners. The right fit wins, not the building we happen to own.

05What if the partner is full?

That is the point of a bench. Another vetted partner takes the move and you still deal with the same desk.

Tell the desk what is moving and where. A person reads it, prices it with the right partner, and replies with a figure and a plan.
