The Washington-Baltimore region holds 6.8 million people and is the fourth-largest consumer market in the United States. That is why Home Depot, Floor & Decor and Under Armour distribute from Sparrows Point and why the Container Store ships from Aberdeen. A consumer packaged goods brand selling into those same stores faces a familiar problem: a retailer routing guide that fines every late or mislabeled pallet, a container that landed at Seagirt three days ago, and a warehouse that has never shipped to that retailer. Baltimore 3PL puts your program in a partner warehouse that already knows the routing guide, then runs the store delivery from one desk.

How this cargo moves through the Port of Baltimore

Imported consumer goods arrive in containers at Seagirt Marine Terminal, the port’s container terminal. Seagirt handled a record 1,113,309 TEU in 2025 with 15 weekly container services. Containers headed to the Midwest can now move by double-stack rail from the on-dock CSX railhead through the Howard Street Tunnel, which reopened for double-stack trains in June 2026. Containers headed to Mid-Atlantic stores move by drayage to a partner warehouse or cross-dock.

The main retail distribution corridors are Jessup, Columbia and Elkridge in Howard County, the BWI corridor in Anne Arundel County, and the I-95 North parks in Harford and Cecil counties. Harford and Cecil vacancy was 8.4 percent in the third quarter of 2026, the Baltimore-Washington corridor 10.5 percent. Space exists in both. The Seagirt terminal page and the double-stack rail page explain the inbound options.

What we set up for retail and CPG shippers

  • Retail-compliant warehousing. Partner warehouses that follow retailer labeling, pallet build, ASN and appointment rules. See retail distribution.
  • Container transload and cross-dock. Containers drayed from Seagirt, floor-loaded cartons palletized, and orders sorted to store or DC through transloading and cross-docking partners.
  • Store and DC delivery. Carrier partners scheduled to retailer appointment windows across Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey.
  • Display builds and repacks. Pallet displays, club packs, shrink bundles and price-ticketing through kitting partners.
  • Inventory and lot control. Lot, date and case-level tracking in the partner warehouse, with daily status by email.
  • Freight brokerage for the long haul. Truckload and LTL capacity for stores outside the day’s-drive radius through our freight brokerage desk.

What the partner network brings

Baltimore 3PL is a service-area logistics company. We do not own a distribution center, a truck or a dock in Baltimore. Every retail move runs through a partner network we have curated for 50 years: warehouse operators, cross-dock crews, drayage carriers, truckload and LTL carriers, forwarders and licensed customs brokers. You get one accountable desk. The desk gets the right partner for the lane. If your program needs a food-grade building for one SKU family and a general merchandise building for another, we place each where it belongs rather than forcing both into one roof. Customs clearance is coordinated through our licensed customs broker partners. Call (419) 745-9492 or email operations@sams3pl.com, Monday to Friday, 07:00 to 18:00 Eastern.

Reach from Baltimore, by the numbers

Retail buyers care about on-time delivery and freight cost per case. Both depend on where the pallet starts. From Seagirt, approximate road miles are: Washington DC 40, Harrisburg 85, Philadelphia 105, Richmond 150, New York 195, Pittsburgh 250. About one third of US households are within a day’s drive. MPA states that trucks from the port reach 35 percent of the US manufacturing base overnight. Baltimore is also the closest Atlantic port to the Midwest, which is why the double-stack rail opening in June 2026 matters for brands with DCs in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.

One local caution. The Key Bridge collapsed in March 2024 and the rebuild is expected to open in late 2030. Standard dry van loads use the I-95 and I-895 harbor tunnels without a problem. Over-height loads above 14 ft 6 in and hazmat loads such as goods with lithium-ion batteries must loop the west side of I-695, which adds 45 to 60 minutes. We flag those SKUs at the quote stage so your store appointments hold.

Questions shippers ask

01Can your partner warehouses meet retailer routing guides?

Yes. We place retail programs in partner warehouses that already ship to major retailers and follow their labeling, pallet and appointment rules. We match the partner to the retailers on your list.

02Which retailers distribute from the Baltimore region?

Home Depot and Floor & Decor run distribution centers at Tradepoint Atlantic. The Container Store distributes from Eastgate 95 in Aberdeen. Under Armour runs its online-order DC at Sparrows Point.

03Do you cross-dock import containers to store orders?

Yes. Containers are drayed from Seagirt to a partner cross-dock, sorted to store or DC orders and reloaded onto outbound trucks without being put away.

04How far does a truck from Baltimore reach in a day?

About one third of US households. Seagirt is about 40 road miles from Washington DC, 85 from Harrisburg, 105 from Philadelphia, 150 from Richmond and 195 from New York.

05Do you own the distribution center?

No. We coordinate retail distribution through partner warehouses in Jessup, Howard County, Harford County and the port district. You get one desk and one daily report.
