Dundalk Marine Terminal can lift 550 short tons with a mobile crane and roll heavy pieces onto a rail spur rated for 71,500 pounds per axle. That is why transformers, generators, turbine components and switchgear for the Mid-Atlantic grid come through the Port of Baltimore. The project manager’s fear is a transformer that lands on time and then waits: for a permit, for an escort, for a crane at the substation, or for someone to notice it cannot fit through a harbor tunnel. Baltimore 3PL plans the lift, the permit, the route and the staging before the vessel is fixed, and holds one desk accountable for the result.
How this cargo moves through the Port of Baltimore
Heavy and oversize energy equipment discharges at Dundalk Marine Terminal, the port’s 570-acre ro-ro and breakbulk terminal with 13 berths, 300-long-ton and 550-short-ton mobile heavy-lift cranes, more than eight miles of on-terminal rail and direct Norfolk Southern service. MPA lists project cargo among Dundalk’s core cargoes, and stevedores there include Mid-Atlantic Terminals, Ceres and Ports America Chesapeake. Rukert Terminals, a family-owned private terminal, handles bulk, breakbulk and project cargo. Containerized components such as control panels, cable and smaller generators arrive at Seagirt, the container terminal.
From the pier, a piece either goes direct to site on a permitted heavy-haul trailer, moves by rail from the Dundalk spur, or waits in a partner yard until the site is ready. See the Dundalk page and the terminals overview.
What we set up for energy and project cargo shippers
- Lift planning. Crane capacity, rigging and lift plan confirmed with the stevedore and rigger through our project cargo and breakbulk desk.
- Heavy-haul carrier placement. Multi-axle, Schnabel and RGN carrier partners matched to the piece, with Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania permits and escorts.
- Tunnel-free routing. Every oversize or hazmat piece routed on the I-695 loop from the first quote.
- Staging. Partner yards and warehouses near Dundalk, Sparrows Point and the BWI corridor for pieces that wait on site readiness.
- Battery and hazmat components. Class 9 lithium-ion units placed with hazmat carrier partners. See our battery and energy storage page.
- Ocean and inland bookings. Breakbulk and ro-ro vessel bookings through our freight forwarding partners, with customs clearance coordinated through our licensed customs broker partners.
- Daily status by email. Pieces discharged, pieces staged, permits issued and deliveries made.
What the partner network brings
Fifty years of partners. One phone number. Baltimore 3PL is a service-area logistics company. We do not own a crane, a trailer, a yard or a warehouse in Baltimore. Every project piece runs through a partner network we have curated for 50 years: breakbulk stevedores, riggers, heavy-haul carriers, hazmat carriers, yard and warehouse operators, forwarders and licensed customs brokers. The desk places each piece with the partner whose equipment and permits fit it. Because there is no fleet to fill, a 200-ton transformer and a container of control panels each get the right carrier. Call (419) 745-9492 or email operations@sams3pl.com, Monday to Friday, 07:00 to 18:00 Eastern, with after-hours coverage by arrangement for night moves.
What is real in Mid-Atlantic energy right now
Honesty about the market is part of the service. Offshore wind left Sparrows Point in October 2026. US Wind relinquished its lease at Tradepoint Atlantic, the US Department of Transportation withdrew a $47.4 million marshalling-port grant, and the federal government asked a court to revoke the project’s approval. We do not sell an offshore wind logistics service, and we do not expect to in 2027.
What is moving:
- Grid storage. Maryland targets 800 MW of transmission-connected storage under the Next Generation Energy Act. The first round, awarded in October 2026, selected a 400 MW project at Chalk Point and a 40 MW project, with 360 MW still to procure. BGE has proposed utility-owned storage. Those projects bring containerized Class 9 battery units, transformers and switchgear through the port.
- Data center power. Generators, switchgear, transformers and UPS for Quantum Frederick and Loudoun County, covered on our data center logistics page.
- Industrial construction. The $3.7 billion Anduril shipyard at Sparrows Point, announced October 2026, and the Sparrows Point Container Terminal, with a first berth due in 2028, both bring multi-year construction inbound of steel, modules and plant equipment.
- Utility replacement programs. Transformers and breakers for substations across Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania, where the route from Dundalk and the tunnel limits decide the schedule.
The routing rule is fixed until the Key Bridge reopens in late 2030 at the earliest. Loads over 14 ft 6 in high or 11 ft wide and all hazmat may not use the I-95 or I-895 tunnels and loop the west side of I-695, adding about 30 to 35 miles and 45 to 60 minutes. The desk prices that loop in every quote so the number holds. Read the Key Bridge routing guide.
What to send for a quote
- Piece list with dimensions, weights and center of gravity where known
- Vessel type and expected arrival, or supplier location for domestic freight
- Site address and the crane or rigging date at delivery
- Staging time expected between arrival and delivery
- Any Class 9 battery or other hazmat component in the program
- Permit history or route survey from previous deliveries to the site

Questions shippers ask
01Can the port lift a large power transformer?
Dundalk Marine Terminal has 300-long-ton and 550-short-ton mobile heavy-lift cranes and a heavy rail spur rated for 71,500 pounds per axle. Rukert Terminals also handles project cargo. We confirm the lift plan with the stevedore before the vessel is fixed.
02Is offshore wind still staging at Sparrows Point?
No. US Wind gave up its Sparrows Point lease in October 2026 and the federal marshalling-port grant was withdrawn. We do not sell an offshore wind service. Land-based energy and grid project cargo still moves through Dundalk and the private terminals.
03How do oversize energy loads cross Baltimore harbor?
They do not use the tunnels. Loads over 14 ft 6 in high or 11 ft wide and all hazmat loop the west side of I-695, about 30 to 35 extra miles, until the Key Bridge reopens in late 2030 at the earliest.
04Can you stage equipment while the substation or plant is not ready?
Yes. Partner yards and warehouses near Dundalk, Sparrows Point and the BWI corridor hold transformers, generators and switchgear until the site crane is booked.
05Do you own the cranes or the heavy-haul trailers?
No. Cranes belong to the terminals and riggers, and trailers belong to our heavy-haul carrier partners. We coordinate the lift, the permit and the route from one desk.
