Spreetail leased 571,762 square feet in Aberdeen in the third quarter of 2026, Home Depot and Floor & Decor distribute from Tradepoint Atlantic at Sparrows Point, and the Container Store ships from Eastgate 95 in Harford County. Big-and-bulky retail chose the Baltimore region because about one third of US households sit within a day’s drive and the Washington-Baltimore market alone holds 6.8 million people. For a furniture, appliance or fitness brand importing through Seagirt, the pain is familiar: floor-loaded containers that take a crew all day to unload, cube that eats warehouse space, and a final mile where a damaged sofa means a refund and a second delivery. Baltimore 3PL coordinates the transload, the storage and the white-glove delivery from one desk.

How this cargo moves through the Port of Baltimore

Furniture and bulky goods arrive in containers at Seagirt Marine Terminal, the port’s container terminal, which handled a record 1,113,309 TEU in 2025 and has 15 weekly container services, 50-foot berths and 12 ship-to-shore cranes. Ports America Chesapeake, the terminal operator, reports truck turns under 30 minutes for a single move. Containers are drayed to a partner warehouse, most often on the I-95 North corridor in Harford and Cecil counties, at Sparrows Point and Dundalk on the east side, or in Jessup and the BWI corridor to the south. Harford and Cecil had 8.4 percent industrial vacancy in the third quarter of 2026, so large-cube buildings exist.

Containers headed to Midwest distribution centers can now move by double-stack rail through the Howard Street Tunnel, which opened to double-stack trains in June 2026. The Seagirt page and the drayage guide explain the gate and the move.

What we set up for furniture and big-and-bulky shippers

  • Floor-load transload. Containers unloaded by partner crews at a transloading dock, with items palletized, scanned and received the same day where volumes allow.
  • Cube-based partner warehousing. Racked and bulk-stack storage sized to the product, with lot and SKU control. See warehousing.
  • White-glove delivery. Two-person teams, room of choice, unpacking, assembly and debris removal through white-glove final-mile partners across Maryland, Washington DC, Northern Virginia, Delaware and southern Pennsylvania.
  • Threshold and curbside options. Lower-cost delivery tiers through LTL carrier partners for items that do not need inside placement.
  • Marketplace and D2C fulfillment. Order integration and shipping through e-commerce fulfillment partners for brands selling direct.
  • Returns and refurbishment. Pickup, inspection, grading and resale or disposal through reverse logistics partners.
  • Daily status by email. Containers received, orders delivered, returns processed and damage exceptions.

What the partner network brings

One desk, every building. Baltimore 3PL is a service-area logistics company. We do not own a warehouse, a box truck or a delivery team in Baltimore. Every piece we move runs through a partner network we have curated for 50 years: transload crews, large-cube warehouse operators, white-glove delivery teams, LTL carriers, drayage carriers, forwarders and licensed customs brokers. The desk places each program with the partner whose building and crews fit the product. A mattress brand and an appliance brand do not need the same warehouse, and we do not pretend they do. Customs clearance is coordinated through our licensed customs broker partners. Call (419) 745-9492 or email operations@sams3pl.com, Monday to Friday, 07:00 to 18:00 Eastern.

Damage, duty and the delivery radius

Three things decide margin on bulky goods.

Damage. Most furniture claims start at the container door or at the customer’s threshold. We place transload work only with crews that unload by hand and palletize for the warehouse, and final delivery only with white-glove partners that photograph condition at pickup and at the door. Exceptions appear in the daily report the same day.

Duty. Furniture importers pay duty on the whole container at entry. Partner warehouses inside Foreign Trade Zone No. 74, which covers Baltimore City and six surrounding counties including all of Tradepoint Atlantic, can hold imported goods with customs duties deferred until they leave for a customer. For slow-turning lines, that deferral matters. The FTZ 74 guide explains how admission works. We coordinate it with the warehouse partner and our licensed customs broker partners.

Radius. From Seagirt it is about 40 road miles to Washington DC, 85 to Harrisburg, 105 to Philadelphia, 150 to Richmond and 195 to New York. A white-glove route from a Baltimore-area warehouse covers the fourth-largest consumer market in the country in a day. Standard delivery trucks use the I-95 and I-895 harbor tunnels. Only loads over 14 ft 6 in high or 11 ft wide, or hazmat such as lithium-ion goods, take the I-695 loop until the Key Bridge reopens in late 2030.

Yes. White-glove partners provide room-of-choice delivery, unpacking, assembly and debris removal across Maryland, Washington DC, Northern Virginia, Delaware and southern Pennsylvania.

03Which big-and-bulky retailers operate in the Baltimore region?

Spreetail took 571,762 square feet in Aberdeen in 2026. Home Depot and Floor & Decor distribute from Tradepoint Atlantic at Sparrows Point. The Container Store distributes from Eastgate 95 in Aberdeen.

04How do you handle returns on furniture?

Returned items are picked up by the delivery partner, inspected and graded at a partner warehouse, then restocked, refurbished or liquidated through reverse logistics partners.

05Do you own the delivery trucks or the warehouse?

No. We coordinate partner warehouses and white-glove carrier partners. You get one desk, one daily report and one point of accountability.
